Saskatchewan Wildfire Update August 15

As of 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 15, there are 79 active wildfires in Saskatchewan. Of those active fires, five are categorized as contained, 12 are not contained, 40 are ongoing assessments and 22 are listed as protecting values.

Four communities are currently under an evacuation order: La Plonge Reserve; Northern Hamlet of Jans Bay; Patuanak/English River First Nation; as well as priority individuals from the Northern Village of Beauval.

Any evacuees should register through the Sask Evac Web Application and then call 1-855-559-5502 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to have their needs assessed for additional assistance. Individuals who need help registering through the application can call the 855 line for assistance.

Evacuees supported by the Canadian Red Cross should call 1-800-863-6582. 

A Look at Wildfire Mutual Aid Agreements  

Mutual Aid Agreements (MAA) bring together the resources of provinces, territories and federal wildfire agencies including Saskatchewan to enhance how they prepare and respond to wildland fire emergencies. They are commitments between different groups or organizations to assist each other when needed.

Saskatchewan is part of a number of MAAs and compacts: 

Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC)
CIFFC is a non-profit organization run by federal, provincial and territorial governments that manage wildfires. 

Northwest Wildland Fire Protection Agreement - NW Compact  
Members are Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, the Yukon, the Northwest Territories, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Hawaii.

Great Plains Interstate Fire Compact  
Members are Saskatchewan, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Arizona, Nevada and Utah.

Alliance of Forest Fire Compacts  
Members are Northeast Forest Fire Compact, Northwest Forest Fire Compact, Great Plains Forest Fire Compact, Big Rivers Forest Fire Compact, Mid-Atlantic Forest Fire Compact, Great Lakes Forest Fire Compact, Southeastern Forest Fire Compact and South Central Forest Fire Compact.

Saskatchewan has access to additional federal-to-federal MAAs with other countries, including the United States, Mexico, South Africa, Australia, Costa Rica, Chile and New Zealand.
