Saskatchewan Declares Fire Prevention Week

Released on October 4, 2021

Today, Saskatchewan Fire Commissioner Marlo Pritchard, along with Minister of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Christine Tell, officially proclaimed Fire Prevention Week, which runs from October 3 to 9.

This year’s theme, Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety, is being bolstered by a new, made-in-Saskatchewan activity book, which is being distributed to Kindergarten to Grade 5 students across the province this week.

“The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) and the Saskatchewan Association of Fire Chiefs (SAFC) collaborated to create the Fire Safety Activity Book,” said Tell. “This is the first educational resource of its kind to be developed and distributed entirely in Saskatchewan in many years.”

“People of all ages can help prevent house fires,” said SAFC President Mike Kwasnica. “We encourage all students to read the book with their family and friends, following the characters as they hunt for fire safety tips.”

Being prepared is the best defence that families have against fire. Fire Prevention Week, originally proclaimed in Canada in 1919, reminds everyone about the different sounds that smoke and carbon monoxide alarms make.

“When something happens in a Saskatchewan community, our professional and volunteer firefighters are ready to respond,” said Tell. “When these brave individuals aren’t putting their lives on the line to fight fires, they are training and promoting fire prevention.”

The Fire Safety Activity Book, along with other fire prevention resources, is available for download at saskpublicsafety.ca.
