Structural Fire Standards

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) is committed to providing essential aspects of fire safety.

This information is designed to empower professional emergency responders with the tools to navigate critical aspects seamlessly with detailed information on streamlining the fire incident reporting process.

Notification of Local Assistant

Under Section 2 of The Fire Safety Act, every municipality in Saskatchewan has a Local Assistant. A municipality may appoint anyone into this role. The Local Assistant has specific powers, duties and obligations under the Act.

Section 13 of The Fire Safety Act requires the local authority to notify the Fire Commissioner of the individual who becomes or ceases to be the local assistant. The completion and submission of this Notification of Local Assistant form meets the requirements to notify the Fire Commissioner of a change within a municipality.

Fire Code Advice

Saskatchewan adopts The National Fire Code of Canada as the minimum standard for fire safety in the province and is integral for ensuring the safety of persons. The National Fire Code of Canada is available for free to download at National Research Council of Canada

The SPSA adopts additional fire code standards through The Fire Safety Regulations to address issues that are unique to Saskatchewan. Persons seeking further information on the fire code or advice can contact 1-800-667-9660 to speak with a SPSA trained professional.

Fire Incident Reporting

Fire Incident Reporting is used to record fire events, origin and cause, casualty, fatality, damage, circumstances of the fire and more. These reports are a legal record of the fact that a fire occurred.

In the fall of 2023, a change in the reporting process meant that fire officials are contacted by the SPSA shortly after dispatch identifies an incident and are given the opportunity to submit their report over the phone. Additionally, fire officials may choose to call in their fire report by phoning 1-800-667-9660

Fire incidents, medical emergencies and other emergencies are common issues to all jurisdictions, regardless of size. It is through data collected at the time of these incidents that an intelligent approach to addressing these concerns can be made.
