Controlled Burns and Notifications

Person burning a pile of dead branches

When you need to burn grass, bush piles or stubble, be sure you are well prepared and that you have fire guards in place.

These "controlled burns" should be reported to avoid deploying firefighters unnecessarily.

Report a controlled burn anywhere in the province.

Controlled burns can be reported any time of year 24/7 from anywhere in the province by calling 1-866-404-4911. You will be asked for:

  1. Your Land Location
  2. Your RM Number
  3. Your Fire Service Provider
  4. Location Details
  5. What are you burning?
  6. How long will your burn last?
  7. Your name and phone number

You will be asked to call back once the burn has been completed.

Burn Notification Numbers

Burning activities within the provincial forest or within a 4.5 kilometer radius of the forest during wildfire season (April 1-October 31) will require a burn notification number.

These Notifications will help make sure that firefighters aren’t sent to your controlled burn location unnecessarily.

Under new regulations, these notifications replace burning permits. Here are more details about the new regulations, including exemptions for small fires.

To apply for a Controlled Burn Number, contact your local SPSA Response Centre Area Office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. You will be asked for the following:

  • Name or organization responsible;
  • Contact number(s);
  • Mailing address;
  • Email address (if applicable);
  • Burn location(s); and
  • Purpose of the burn.

All fires must be extinguished by the expiry date and time.

  • Burn Notification Numbers expire at the end of the day following the day of issue.

Brush pile numbers (defined in regulation as not less than two metres in height and three metres in diameter), expire at the end of the fourth day after the day of issue.

Remember: Your fire is your responsibility.

If you start a fire that spreads, or is likely to spread, you are responsible for covering the ministry's firefighting costs, whether you have a Burn Notification Number or not.
